Pan's labyrinth

Pale Man Induction

The use of sound helps to create meaning in pans labyrinth by giving the spectre a good idea of the feel of the scene the use of the soundscape of the labyrinth this is the creepy noises in the background this dissonance shows the audience that it is a old creepy place which is unwelcoming. the way this is done is through the change of music from when she is in her bedroom to when she enters the labyrinth, it goes from quite and slow music to loud and fast music. This is then further emphasised by the creepy noise that sounds as though it could be coming from he Pale man, by using the Asynchronous sound it helps to give them more interest by not letting them see it further emphasises the idea of the labyrinth being unknown territory for Ofelia but also the audience creating that connection that the spectre has with Ofelia as they are both in this unknown together. This shows the Spector that the labyrinth is a unknown and large area this is further shown by the tracking back shot to then show this long hallway with Ofelia at the end by the door. There is a Leitmotif in the labyrinth this use of recurring sound helps make the spectre feel as though they are also stuck here.

The use of the cinematograph helps to give the spectre an understanding of her point of view this is demonstrated through the use of the point of view shot to the ceiling. When the camera is looking up it spins around to show all these pictures of the pale man killing children the music matches this but also the camera spins around this makes the spectre feel disorientated and confused as there is a lot to take in with the camera moving in a circular motion this is a bit of a sensory overload as we have just seen the pale man and now it is focusing on the surroundings and the rest of the room it keeps the Spector on the edge. The cinematography is mainly medium come ups (MCU) this is to give the spectre an intimate and personal feel connecting them with Ofelia and giving them sympathy for her as she is presented as small in comparison to the rest of the room, This gives that idea of empowering the weak and small. The mise en scene and the colour palette in the scene helps to further make Ofelia stand out as a character. the surroundings are very heavy with the colours like brown an burgundy which are complement colours to then Ofelia wearing mint green which stands out and is different to the other colours showing that the sectors focus should be mainly on her as she does not blend in. The Mise en scene helps to further the spectres understanding of Ofelia as a character. She is presented as well kept and well dressed as she is wearing smart clothes, her hair is neat and tidy and she does not look scruffy or dirty. whereas her surroundings are seen as sandy and old which juxtaposes her to her surroundings

Editing

The kuleshov effect
it was made in the 1920s

is a concept where whatever you put after a cut helps to tell about the character as a person by their reaction to what they see this can help give the audience a better understanding on the personality of the character ad form their opinion on that character.

The cutting room floor

A technique in film editing in which series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time and information

Graphic matching

The creation of strong visual similarity between shots, encouraging audiences to make connections between them

Mise-en-scène

Sound

Performance

A jump cut is in film editing in which two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly if at all. This type of edit gives the effect of jumping forward in time

Elliptical editing: whereby parts of the story are purposely omitted, leaving the audience to 'fill the gaps'

Cross cutting: editing that alternates between two or more spheres of action occurring in different places, often simultaneously

Cuts and transitions

Vidal feast scene (editing)

Diegetic audience = the audience in the film
editing =

NOTES= the edit from vials face which then cuts to the cars showing what he is waiting for and looking at. it cuts from outside to the inside in the dining hall the cuts are setting up for the dinner meaning they have longer cuts. it shows the characters meeting and then it cuts to Vidal holding the ration cards giving the audience an idea of the purpose of the dinner. during the dinner the cuts are shorter to show all of the characters as there are a lot of people at the table. the short cuts also help to show the business of the table as there is a lot going on an example is the cut from the doctor to the priest. There is focus on the top of the table with the rabbits in the foreground it then cuts to a medium close up of Vidal showing him talking with the fire behind him and his glasses in front. Mercedes is then shown at the edge of the forest with the light cutting to a POV shot then cutting to show it was Ofelias point of view. There are cuts from one person asking a question and then the whole of the table. Shot reverse shot is used to show the conversation with carmen and Vidal, when she is talking we see carmen through a over the shoulder shot from the caption showing the male dominance and how he is controlled by her and when the shot is reversed it shows Vidal but not from over the shoulder showing how she is the inferior character.

In the scene where Vidal hosts the dinner the editing is key to understanding the scene but to understand this we need to first understand the directors intentions in this scene del toro intended to present the ideas of patriarchy an example of this is when Vidal and carmen are talking about how they met and there is a shot reverse show but when we see carmen it is over Vidal's shoulder but when we see Vidal it is not over carmen shoulder. this is showing us that vidal is the superior character and this is that idea of the patriarchy being bad and this idea is presented by using Vidal who is the antagonist as a mouthpiece for the patriarchy. through the fascist regime this is mirroring how

Comments

  1. Some good work here, Josh - Like the way you've picked up on specific micro features and analysed them in detail.

    Paragraph 1
Overall, you could do with saving some time at the end of any piece of writing to proof read - mainly, checking all full stops are correct and present
Check spelling of key words - you've written "spectre" a couple of times - I think this should read "spectator"
Good use of terminology - tracking back and leitmotif
Try to use a little more variety when describing effect - you use "creepy" a couple of times; try to develop this

    Paragraph 2
"When the camera is looking up it spins around to show all these pictures of the pale man killing children the music matches this but also the camera spins around this makes the spectre feel disorientated and confused as there is a lot to take in with the camera moving in a circular motion this is a bit of a sensory overload as we have just seen the pale man and now it is focusing on the surroundings and the rest of the room it keeps the Spector on the edge. " An example of a very long sentence. The use of camera terminology is really good, but it gets a little muddled due to the length of the sentence. Try to break your ideas down into chunks and explain each, rather than trying to fit everything in to a single sentence.
Overall, I think the strongest section is the part in red, as this is focused on specific points
